This DIY is super-simple and requires pretty much no skills at all. It’s a great project to include your kids in (you can replace the modelling clay with salt dough, if you like) and let them play around and make their own little ornaments while you do your thing with perfect shapes and lace.
First you have to roll out the clay a little thicker than what you prefer for your ornaments. Make sure it’s nice and smooth, then place the lace fabric on top of it and roll a little more, pressing the pattern of the lace onto your modelling clay, like so:
Then place your cookie cutter on top of the patterned clay so that it cuts out a pretty part of the pattern.
If your little assistant steps in to help, do not – I repeat – DO NOT try to stop her. She’ll kick and scream and be impossible. Starting all over again is easier than explaining why you want her to stick to her own little piece of clay.
End result:
To cut little holes into your clay ornaments before they’ve dried and hardened, use a straw and punch holes wherever you like. I just took a mechanical pencil, removed the eraser off the top and used the top end for cutting holes. Just use your imagination.
Once they’ve dried, you can spray paint them any color you like – I’m going to paint mine white. The clay turns an off-white color once it dries but since all my other Christmas tree ornaments are in bright white, I want them to match.
I hope this gave you an idea or at least some motivation to start crafting for Christmas. It’s just as ridiculously easy as it seems and the clay cost 3.50€ at our local supermarket (Selver). Piece of cake clay!
Im so going to do this with Ida in the weekend 😀
great idea! does she still put stuff in her mouth? maybe it would be better to make salt dough or buy some baby-friendly clay? 🙂
We will make salt dough 🙂 since Ida’s cousin is here next weekend 😀
well then, happy crafting and send me a picture of how you did 🙂
I’ll post some on my blog 🙂
im not even sure what your blog address is 🙂 sharing is caring, Maria!
So far im still working on the layout and the first posts 🙂 i’ll share it when it is ready 🙂
Kuidas sa vormiga liniku katki said
Rullid mustri läbi liniku savi sisse ja võtad liniku pealt ära, lõikad kujundi välja ja valma – linik ei jää ehte külge 🙂
Hehe. But where to you get un voilage in a country that hasn’t even evolved a name for it and you are forced to call it a ‘lace material.’ 😀
wherever – the point is you can use whichever material that has a lace pattern and can be used to create the effect 😀
Sina, nobedate näppudega preili, kas Sa oskad öelda, kumb on nö vastupidavam soolataigen või savi ? 🙂
savi – savi juba märjalt on voolida elastsem, soolataigen jääb rabedam 🙂 aga noh, mina tegin voolimismassi, mitte naturaalse saviga, nii et ma ei tea. aga hääletan ikkagi savi poolt 🙂
